Tis the Season of the Prom

April 25, 2010

Prom time is probably one of the most anticipated events next to the Homecoming Dance.  To many it’s a celebratory event reminding the students the end of high school to come, and that this is probably the last time any of them will see each other again in that particular setting.  So, the stage is set, the event is scheduled and it all comes down to who will be taking whom to the prom.  And what will the ladies be wearing?  For this post, I’ve taken the liberty of spotlighting my favorite picks that come from Jovani.com, Promdresses,com and Nordstroms.

I love this piece from Jovani.com.  This cocktail dress has a victorian look to it.  You can find Jovani’s cocktail and prom dresses at The Mint Collection. You can buy online or visit their store at:

For the plus size girl, I found this pretty piece at Nordstrom from the JS Boutique collection.  It’s a pretty dress with a beaded trim at the straps and scooped neckline tops a flirty chiffon skirt with a flattering, ruched bodice above a floaty knee-length skirt.  Has a gathered center panel falls from the bust to the hem, for an elegant sense of motion.  It has a back zipper, is fully lined and comes in violet only.

This piece is from Prom Dresses 2010 and sells for $149.  It’s a gorgeous bubble strapless dress decorted with tiny beads and a beautiful thin pin.

To boldly state these lovely dresses on the night of the prom, I’d recommend dressing them up with very subtle accessories.  Clutch purses would be the norm and simple strappy sandals would be perfect.  A light shawl could be ideal for keeping warm in the evening’s night air and hair could be done up in simple styles to make the dresses of choice stand out elegantly.

Don’t shy away from pleats, off the shoulder dresses or a-symetrical dresses which seem to be popular styles these days in the prom scene.  Like the two blue dresses you see here that come from my closet.  These can be ideal for a prom event.  The dress with the tie in the front is a Maggy London collection I purchased from the Home Shopping Network in July 2006 to wear to my 20 year high school reunion.  It is 100% silk and polyester fabric blend.
The pleated dress comes from a sweet dress shop located at the Fox Hills Mall on the same level as Old Navy.  The dress is a 100% polyester/spandex blend.  You can find this dress at smaller local boutiques or area swapmeets at almost half the cost of what I paid for it.

And here’s an idea of a strappy sandal I was talking about earlier.  This shoe has a 4 1/2 inch heel with rhinestone T-straps with a designed silvery base heel and sole, with a cushioned footbed.  This shoe comes from Amiclubwear.com, also a part of my shoe collection.

Prom season doesn’t have to cost a fortune when shopping for the right ensemble, but if you find that you’re going to spend the big bucks, shop around for the best stores and online sites.  There is a huge selection to choose from this season.  You’ll find that this year there’s a lot of floral prints and colors to choose from.  Short and flirty dresses are becoming more popular.  You may actually find an array of assortments in Downtown Los Angeles’ garment district.
